Catherine Lopez, MS, Lead, Clinical Research Program Coordinator, joined the Developing Brain Institute in 2018. During this time, Catherine has been instrumental in developing strong relationships with our fetal cardiology team and the cardiac intensive care unit. She has taken the lead on our fetal cardiac research studies and has successfully trained new study coordinators and nurses on our fetal heart-brain initiatives. More recently, Catherine has supported our community outreach efforts and has helped forge new relationships with a number of obstetrical partners, including George Washington OB in Bethesda, Washington Hospital Center in D.C., and Holy Cross MFM providers. Over the past year, Catherine expanded the scope of her work to include very active involvement in perinatal mental health focus groups for both African American pregnant women and for pregnant women carrying fetuses diagnosed with CHD. Working alongside Jessica Quistorff, Catherine has been critical to the success of the Project RESCUE protocol and played a major role in establishing the postnatal arm of Project RESCUE to include recruitment of newborns at Washington Hospital Center who had been exposed to COVID-19 infection before birth. Having previously worked in transplant clinical trials, Catherine joined the team with a keen understanding of research activities for their ongoing fetal studies. Over time, her interests in health education and literacy have grown and the Institute has helped to foster these interests as well as apply them to her current work in maternal and infant health. A native of the greater District of Columbia region, she hopes to bring research to women and children in this area, especially those who may be more marginalized or have less access.
